Step 1

Tilt the sofa forward and extend the strip of side upholstery. So that the back faces straight up into the air, lift the sofa up.

Many covered couches have a removable back panel that can be lifted to reveal the inside frame.

Open the Velcro strips and then attach the fabric to the base and raise the panel.

Step 2

Search for the locking levers around the sofa. Test the frames for the locking levers on either side of the sofa seats.

You can see a metal lever pointing in a downward direction on either side of the main body of the couch, around where the top of the arm and back join.

Don’t forget to look in the console of the sofa and frames in between the seats.

Step 3

Search for the levers between the seats for locking. Search through the rear seams on the left and right sides of the sofa.

If it doesn't have any detachable strips of fabric then look for seams, if any are there, between the centre console and seats.

Turn inside the seams for the locking lever pointed in a down position.

Step 4

To unlock the seat backs, raise the locking levers. To loosen and lift each lever and release the seat back, use a flat head screwdriver or, in a pinch, your fingertips.

Once you open the levers, return the sofa to its usual position and carefully raise the back out of its frame.
